My name is Wendy Jimenez and I am a freshman on my second semester at CCNY. I am still undecided in terms of what I would like to major in. However, I hope that through experience and exposure to many topics and ideas I can make a decision soon. I have not taken any other science classes here at CCNY but I am interested in organism systems and the environment. I like the first field because I like to know how small things function and connect to serve a specific function. One of the things I would compare this to would be the making of proteins, or a product being assembled in a factory. I enjoy learning about the environment because after going to an environmental school I became aware of just how big human impact affects the world. I found that coexisting with other living organisms and personal comfort and convenience, are things that are equally important but that many countries around the world don’t consider it to be this way. From this I learned that legislation and awareness are the two most powerful ways we can start reversing the harm we have had on our planet.
After learning more about this class and its guidelines, I think the biggest goal I have is to improve my analytical reading and writing skills, as I find that this has always been one of my weaknesses, and working on it will most likely help me in the future even with other classes that aren’t science based. I had taken a science research class in high school that revolved around reading scientific articles and doing a brief presentation on the topic of the articles, but I felt like I wasn’t able to fully analyze the articles I read and there weren’t many strategies that I knew of at the time. I would like to be able to read articles and fully grasp everything or most of what they’re saying and be able to understand and explain the meaning myself. In terms of being a student at CCNY I would like to be more engaged in everything I do and have a purpose for doing something rather than just doing it because it’s expected, this could be in my classes or extracurricular activities I do. Overall I am looking forward to this class and I would really like to be focused and engaged in every assignment I am given, and that I can take everything that I learn here and apply it to the future whether that be other classes or after college, in my job or internships and I think this would be the biggest goal, to take what I’ve learned with me wherever I go.
